Hope*Filled Mondays No. 4 – The Fruit of the Spirit

This week I’ve chosen this verse in honor of a dear friend of mine. As I’ve struggled with controlling my emotions over the years, she has been an encouragement to my heart of God’s love and power at work in my heart. A year or so ago, she said to me, “Love, joy, peace, and self-control are ALWAYS available to you through the Holy Spirit living in you.” I’ve gone back to this reminder often.

As I wrestle against my anger, pride, anxiety, and grumbling attitude, I often fail to remember this truth. I tend to give myself a “pass” and blame my sin on my circumstances. So often my excuses sound like, “I was overly tired that day”, or “I was struggling with an exhausting to-do list”, or “If he had been a better leader….” Yet, as my dear friend reminded me, the characteristics that God calls us to display are not lived out in our own strength, but by reliance on the Holy Spirit who is not constrained by our circumstances or weaknesses.

In my own strength, I will fail to live up to this list every single time. God Himself is the source of these beautiful characteristics, and He is the only one who consistently demonstrates them. The more we know God and dwell on the Gospel story that has changed us, we realize that each of these characteristics is perfectly displayed by God in the story of our redemption. As we meditate on Christ and His work on our behalf, our hearts are changed to reflect these characteristics to our homes and communities by reliance on the Holy Spirit at work within us. As we seek to abide in Christ and to live in utter dependence on His Spirit, we will be given the strength to walk in obedience without excuse or blame-shifting, just as my friend faithfully reminded me on that day not so long ago.

Enjoy! As always, we’d love if you share the word so all your friends can enjoy these fun freebies! Have a wonderful week, friends!

Grace + Peace,
